Is someone telling you to stop your omega-3? 🐟 šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Nope, please don't -the studies are there supporting omega-3 use. Decades of research! Omega-3s are good. "But they are a PUFA Dr. Jen and you told me those are bad." Yes, they are bad, if rancid, the hydrogen bonds break and they become toxic (check out my post on PUFAs). (PUFA = Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid)

What about the supplements?

Not all omega-3 supplements are created the same. Omega-3s in their food form are in a triglyceride form. However, when turned into a supplement it's turned into an ethyl ester (not bioavailable!). When looking for an Omega-3 supplement you want it to be cold extracted and converted back into triglyceride. The triglyceride (TG) form for superior absorption and bioavailability.

Obviously getting Omega-3s in your diet is best. I have found though it's very hard to get the correct ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 in our diets due to all of the crazy amounts of omega-6s we consume!!

Omega-6s stay in your body for a long time. This can and will throw off the balance of omega3 to omega6. The problem is we are consuming A LOT more Omega 6 fatty acids than ever before. The frustrating thing is practices like farming salmon where the salmon is given feed to eat- they end up having a higher omega6 balance. You think you are eating sometime healthy- but you aren't! I always say better to have the burger then the farm raised salmon!

What omega-3s do I take? I love Healthology by Dr. Jen's Omega because they are TG form. My patients who take these notice they don't get the burping or nasty taste either!

You can purchase here or in my office.
