Recently, cases of cyclosporiasis have been increasing across the United States, leaving many people struggling with prolonged diarrhea, bloating, fatigue, nausea, weight loss, and digestive symptoms that can linger for weeks.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is usually contracted through contaminated food or water. While prescription treatment may be necessary in some cases, especially for severe symptoms, supportive care plays an important role in helping the gut recover and restoring digestive resilience.
Why Recovery Can Take So Long
One of the unique features of Cyclospora is that symptoms may come and go. Even after the infection begins to improve, many people continue to experience:
Bloating
Food sensitivities
Fatigue
Loose stools
Irritable bowel symptoms
Secondary dysbiosis or SIBO-like symptoms
The parasite can disrupt the intestinal lining and alter the gut microbiome, making gut support important during recovery.
Step 1: Prioritize Hydration
The most immediate concern during acute illness is dehydration.
Consider supporting hydration with:
Electrolytes (SALTR code DRJEN)
Bone broth
Mineral-rich fluids
Small, frequent sips if nausea is present
Persistent diarrhea can lead to significant fluid and electrolyte losses, particularly in children, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions.
Step 2: Support the Gut Barrier
The intestinal lining often becomes irritated after prolonged gastrointestinal infections.
Supporting the gut lining may help promote recovery and improve resilience.
Gut Protect may help support:
Intestinal barrier integrity
Healthy inflammatory responses
Digestive comfort
Recovery of the gut lining following stressors
Gut Shield provides additional support for maintaining a healthy intestinal environment and may be beneficial during the recovery phase when symptoms such as bloating and food sensitivities persist.
The goal during this stage is not simply symptom suppression but helping the gut rebuild and restore normal function.
Binder Pro may help support the body's natural detoxification processes by helping bind unwanted compounds within the gastrointestinal tract and supporting a healthier intestinal environment.
Some practitioners utilize binders during recovery protocols to support:
✔ Digestive comfort✔ Healthy inflammatory responses✔ Gut barrier recovery✔ Reduction of symptom flares during microbial support protocols
As always, binders should be taken away from medications and supplements when possible, as they may interfere with absorption..
Step 3: Consider Targeted Microbial Support
Because parasitic infections can alter the microbiome, some individuals may benefit from additional digestive support.
Para-Gone
Para-Gone contains botanicals traditionally used to support microbial balance and digestive health.
Ingredients commonly used in parasite-support protocols may help promote a healthy intestinal environment while the body recovers.
SIB-Oil
After gastrointestinal infections, some individuals develop symptoms resembling small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), including:
Bloating
Gas
Food sensitivities
Abdominal discomfort
SIB-Oil may help support microbial balance and digestive comfort during this recovery phase.
Step 4: Support Digestive Recovery
Following acute infection, focus on:
Gentle nutrition
Choose easy-to-digest foods such as:
Well-cooked vegetables
Soups
Bone broth
Whey Proteins
Temporary reduction of gut irritants
Some people may temporarily benefit from limiting:
Alcohol (or forever stop)
Highly processed foods
Excess sugar
Large amounts of raw vegetables
Heavy, greasy meals
Step 5: Watch for Persistent Symptoms
If symptoms continue despite supportive care, work with your integrative doctor.
Persistent symptoms may warrant evaluation for:
Ongoing infection
Secondary SIBO
Nutrient deficiencies
Gut dysbiosis
Post-infectious IBS
Because Cyclospora testing is not included on every stool panel, healthcare providers often need to specifically request testing.
Conventional Treatment Options
The standard pharmaceutical treatment for cyclosporiasis is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), commonly known as Bactrim®. (source CDC)
Typical dosing:
Adults
TMP 160 mg plus SMX 800 mg (one double-strength tablet)
Taken orally twice daily for 7–10 days
Pediatric patients (2 months to 18 years)
TMP 8–10 mg/kg/day plus SMX 40–50 mg/kg/day
Divided into two doses daily for 7–10 days
Individuals who are immunocompromised, including some patients living with HIV, may require longer treatment courses.
At this time, no other pharmaceutical treatments have demonstrated the same level of effectiveness as Bactrim for Cyclospora infections.
However, it is important to recognize that Bactrim is not tolerated by everyone. Some individuals experience side effects such as:
Rash
Gastrointestinal upset
Headache
Photosensitivity
Rare but serious allergic reactions
Additionally, sulfa allergies are relatively common and may limit treatment options for some patients.
There have been reports of improvement in some cases with nitazoxanide, an antiparasitic medication that has also been studied for broader antimicrobial and antiviral applications. However, the data for nitazoxanide in treating cyclosporiasis remain limited, and it is not currently considered a proven first-line therapy.
Because symptoms can sometimes persist even after treatment, supportive measures aimed at restoring gut health, hydration, and microbial balance may play an important role in recovery.
A Integrative Medicine Perspective
In integrative medicine, recovery is about more than eliminating a pathogen.
It is about asking:
How can we restore the gut barrier?
How can we support the microbiome?
How can we rebuild resilience?
Supporting hydration, nourishing the intestinal lining, and restoring digestive function may help individuals feel better as they recover. My favorite electrolytes are SALTR. If you use code DRJEN it saves you 10% on your order.
