Why I Encourage Women to Rethink Alcohol

As an integrative physician, I rarely tell women they "can never" do something.

But alcohol is one of the few things I consistently encourage women—especially those in perimenopause and menopause—to seriously reconsider.

If you're struggling with weight gain around your midsection, heavy periods, breast tenderness, migraines, anxiety, poor sleep, hot flashes, or estrogen dominance, alcohol may be working against you in more ways than you realize.

It isn't simply about calories.

It's about priorities.

Your Liver Has One Job at a Time

I like to explain the liver like a busy office.

Every day, it's processing nutrients, packaging vitamins, balancing blood sugar, making cholesterol, detoxifying medications and environmental chemicals, and breaking down hormones like estrogen so they can safely leave the body.

Now imagine someone bursts into that office carrying a stack of papers stamped:

URGENT. DROP EVERYTHING.

That's alcohol.

The moment alcohol enters your bloodstream, your liver immediately shifts its attention.

Alcohol is treated as a toxin because, biologically, that's exactly what it is.

Your liver temporarily stops many of its routine housekeeping jobs so it can neutralize alcohol before it damages the rest of your body.

While it is doing that...

Everything else waits.

What Happens to Estrogen?

One of the liver's most important jobs is breaking down used estrogen.

Think of estrogen like mail that has already been delivered.

Once your body has used it, that mail needs to be filed away and removed.

But if your liver is busy dealing with alcohol, that estrogen doesn't get processed as efficiently.

Instead, it can continue circulating longer than it should.

For some women, this contributes to symptoms such as:

  • Breast tenderness

  • PMS

  • Heavy or painful periods

  • Mood swings

  • Water retention

  • Fibroids

  • Endometriosis

  • Difficulty losing weight

  • Increased hot flashes during perimenopause

This doesn't mean one glass of wine suddenly causes estrogen dominance.

It means repeated alcohol use makes it harder for your body to keep hormones balanced over time.

Alcohol Increases Inflammation

Alcohol doesn't only affect estrogen.

It also increases inflammation throughout the body.

Inflammation can worsen:

  • Insulin resistance

  • Joint pain

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Gut permeability

  • Fatty liver

  • Poor recovery after exercise

Inflammation also changes the information your hypothalamus receives.

Remember, your hypothalamus is constantly asking one question:

"Is this body safe?"

Alcohol sends mixed signals.

Blood sugar becomes unstable.

Sleep becomes fragmented.

Stress hormones increase during the night.

Heart rate stays elevated.

Instead of feeling restored the next morning, your brain often wakes up believing it just survived another stressful event.

Alcohol Disrupts Sleep More Than Most People Realize

Many women tell me wine helps them relax.

It probably does.

Alcohol can make you fall asleep faster.

But falling asleep is not the same as restorative sleep.

As alcohol is metabolized overnight, cortisol begins to rise, your heart rate increases, and deep sleep decreases.

This means less growth hormone release.

Less tissue repair.

Poor blood sugar regulation the next day.

More cravings.

More fatigue.

Less resilience.

If you're waking up at 2:00 or 3:00 AM after drinking, alcohol may be playing a bigger role than you realize.

Alcohol and Weight Loss

One of the biggest frustrations I hear is:

"I'm eating healthy, exercising, and my weight won't budge."

Alcohol may be one missing piece.

When alcohol is present, fat burning largely pauses because your body is focused on eliminating alcohol first.

Remember that busy office.

The liver simply cannot prioritize everything at once.

Detoxifying alcohol comes first.

Burning fat comes later.

Alcohol Ages the Skin

As women, we often spend hundreds of dollars on skincare.

Then we unknowingly consume something that accelerates aging from the inside.

Alcohol contributes to:

  • Dehydration

  • Collagen breakdown

  • Increased inflammation

  • Blood sugar swings that promote glycation

  • Oxidative stress

Over time this may contribute to wrinkles, dull skin, puffiness, facial redness, and slower healing.

Healthy skin begins with healthy cells—not just expensive creams.

My Challenge to Women

I'm not here to shame anyone for enjoying a glass of wine.

My goal is to help you understand what your body is doing behind the scenes.

If your hormones feel out of balance...

If your weight has plateaued...

If your sleep isn't restorative...

If anxiety has become more common...

If you're entering perimenopause...

Consider taking alcohol out of the equation for 30 to 60 days.

Watch what happens.

Many women notice:

  • Better sleep

  • Less anxiety

  • Fewer cravings

  • Improved energy

  • Easier weight loss

  • Less bloating

  • Better skin

  • More stable moods

Sometimes the biggest improvements don't come from adding another supplement.

They come from removing something that has quietly been asking your liver to put everything else on hold.

Your liver is incredibly resilient.

When you support it well, it can do what God designed it to do—help keep your hormones, metabolism, and overall health in balance.

Strong in faith. Strong in health.
