When headlines start circulating about viruses, it’s easy to feel fear rise quickly. But fear is not a strategy.
Understanding how your body works is.
Let’s talk about hantavirus — what it is, what actually matters, and how to support your body wisely.
What Is Andes Virus?
Hantaviruses are a group of RNA viruses that can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare but serious respiratory illness. Most hantaviruses are spread through contact with infected rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, often when contaminated dust is inhaled.
The Andes virus strain is found mainly in South America and is unique because it is the only hantavirus known to occasionally spread from person to person, though this is uncommon and typically requires close contact with someone who is symptomatic.
Incubation Period
The incubation period (time from exposure to symptoms) for hantavirus is typically:
About 1 to 8 weeks after exposure
This wide range is one reason people may not immediately connect symptoms to an earlier environmental exposure.
Common Symptoms
Early symptoms often resemble a flu-like illness and may include:
Fever
Fatigue
Muscle aches
Headache
Chills
Nausea or vomiting
As the illness progresses, more severe symptoms can develop, including:
Cough
Shortness of breath
Difficulty breathing due to lung involvement
Facts (and Faith) Over Fear
You don’t need panic. You need awareness, prevention, and a resilient immune system.
Your immune system is your first and most important line of defense—not just against hantavirus, but any viral exposure.
Why Immune Health Matters
Your body is constantly:
Identifying threats
Responding
Adapting
But many women in midlife are dealing with:
Chronic stress
Poor sleep
Inflammation
Nutrient depletion
Gut imbalance
All of these weaken immune resilience.
Viruses don’t just “win”—they take advantage of a system that’s already overwhelmed.
What Weakens Your Immune System
1. Processed Foods
Highly processed foods, excess sugar, and inflammatory oils disrupt gut health and immune signaling. (thanks to MAHA this is getting better!)
2. Chronic Stress
Long-term elevated cortisol can:
Suppress immune response
Increase inflammation
Disrupt sleep
3. Alcohol
Alcohol:
Impairs liver detox pathways
Disrupts the gut lining
Weakens immune function
If your body is dealing with mold or mycotoxins, your immune system is already overburdened.
This is often an overlooked root issue that needs to be addressed.
The Nervous System Connection
You cannot talk about immunity without talking about the nervous system.
If your body is stuck in a fight-or-flight state, it will not prioritize healing.
Supporting your parasympathetic nervous system is key.
This includes:
Breath work
Nervous system regulation
Limbic system retraining
If you want to go deeper into this, I teach this inside my limbic system course: 👉 access it here.
Supporting the Body During RNA Viral Exposure
Hantavirus is an RNA virus. While there is no simple “cure,” and we are being told only supportive care- there are ways to support your body’s response.
Medications: Talk With Your Doctor
Ivermectin —
Ivermectin has been studied for potential antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects.
Proposed mechanisms include:
Inhibition of nuclear transport proteins (importin α/β1)
Potential reduction in viral replication within cells
Modulation of inflammatory pathways
This is not something to self-prescribe. Always talk with your physician about whether this is appropriate for you.
Supplements That May Support Immune Function
These are supportive tools—not cures—but can help optimize your body’s response:
Vitamin C
Zinc
Melatonin
Think of these as supporting the terrain, not fighting the virus directly.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just about hantavirus.
It’s about how your body is functioning every day.
Your body is constantly asking:
Am I safe?
Do I have what I need?
Can I respond effectively?
A Faith Perspective
You were not designed to live in fear.
Your body was created with intention and resilience.
Caring for your health is not about panic. It’s about stewardship.
Bottom Line
Hantavirus is rare
Awareness matters
Fear does not help (it hurts!)
What matters most:
Supporting your immune system
Reducing chronic stress
Nourishing your body
Addressing root causes like inflammation or mold
Final Thought
Your body is not defenseless. It’s designed to respond.
When you support it well, it often does exactly that.
