How I’m Treating Mold Exposure and MARCoNS in My 5-Year-Old Son

As a physician and mom, nothing is more frustrating than watching your child struggle with symptoms you know are coming from a root cause—especially one as stealthy as mold exposure. After discovering that my 5-year-old son, Emery, was exposed to mold in his preschool environment and tested positive for MARCoNS (Multiple Antibiotic-Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci), I knew I had to take a multi-layered, root-cause approach.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the exact integrative protocol I’m using to help him detox from mold, restore nasal health, and support his immune system—naturally and safely.
🧠 What Is MARCoNS?
MARCoNS is a type of antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria that often colonizes the nasal passages in people exposed to water-damaged buildings or biotoxin illness. It’s not just a nuisance—MARCoNS can produce a biofilm that suppresses melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), damages mucosal immunity, and contributes to chronic inflammation.
Emery’s culture showed that his MARCoNS strain was resistant to both gentamicin and Bactrim, which ruled out traditional treatments like BEG spray. This is most likely from my history of working in the Emergency Room. This led me to pivot toward a more natural and targeted plan.
🏡 Step 1: Remove the Exposure
The first and most critical step was removing Emery from the mold-contaminated preschool. At home, I made sure his environment was clean and dry, with indoor humidity below 50%. We now run HEPA + VOC air purifiers in his room and main living space daily.

👃 Step 2: Treat the MARCoNS Without Antibiotics
Since traditional BEG spray was not an option, I turned to a natural antimicrobial nasal protocol:
Argentyn 23 (1 spray per nostril, 2x/day)
Xlear Nasal Spray with xylitol and grapefruit seed extract

This combo helps break down biofilms and reduce the microbial load naturally—without contributing to antibiotic resistance.
🔬 Step 3: Add KPV to Calm Inflammation
KPV (Lysine-Proline-Valine peptide) is a game-changing tool in mold recovery. I chose oral KPV for Emery due to its ability to reduce inflammation, support the gut, and regulate immune responses—especially important for kids with MARCoNS.
We started with 250 mcg oral KPV daily
Mixed into a smoothie or yogurt for easy dosing
It’s gentle, safe, and backed by emerging data on its anti-inflammatory and immune-balancing properties.
🧽 Step 4: Support Detox Pathways
To help his little body clear mycotoxins, we added:
Glutathione or NAC for cellular detox
Binders like activated charcoal and chlorella (at a kid-safe dose, spaced away from meals and meds)
Magnesium and plenty of hydration
(Redmond kids electrolytes work great also! Code DRJEN)

🦠 Step 5: Rebuild the Gut + Immune System
Mold doesn’t just affect the sinuses—it disrupts the gut microbiome, which affects everything from behavior to immunity. For rebuilding, I use:
Spore-based probiotic
Probiotic with Saccharomyces boulardii
Vitamin D3/K2 drops
Quercetin if histamine symptoms flare- Hist Aid Jr
🕘 Sample Daily Routine
Time | Protocol |
Morning | Oral KPV + Vitamin D + Probiotic + Glutathione/NAC |
Midday | Nasal spray + Binder (spaced from food/meds) |
Evening | Nasal spray + Magnesium + S. boulardii |
👩⚕️ A Final Note from a Doctor-Mom
This process isn’t fast—but it’s effective when done consistently. Kids are resilient, and with the right support, they can recover fully from environmental illness. If your child has had mold exposure, sinus issues, or unexplained behavioral changes, don’t overlook MARCoNS and mold toxicity as potential root causes.
